Many Catholics are concerned about Presidential candidate Joe Biden’s stance on school choice programs, and retired educator and Miami resident Sylvia Galan recently spoke about her viewpoint.

Galan is a mother of three boys and believes in quality education.

“Catholic Schools provide quality education, not only in academics but also, and most important[ly], in the principles given to us by God and passed down by the Church,” Galan told South Miami-Dade News.

Catholic schools respect and teach the intrinsic dignity of every human person and pass down these values to their students.”

Galan’s opinion on this also stems from her Catholic education.

“Families should be able to send their children to Catholic schools, of course. We all pay taxes toward education. The state cannot dictate how we educate our children.”

There is a lack of support for Biden from Galan because she is adamant about it being in the hands of the parents to make such decisions.

“I would not support a political candidate who denies parents their choice of education for their children. Parents have primacy over their children; therefore, I cannot support Biden in his stance against the parental choice of schools.”

Many of Galan’s concerns come from the “usurpation of parental rights.”

“This usurpation is incompatible with our God-given rights protected by the Constitution. This usurpation testifies to tyranny,” Galan continued, “This is an issue that all Catholics should take into heart, as well as every parent, no matter their faith because the formation of children begins at home. It is not in the realm of the state to dictate the principles taught children in school. It is subjugating to have a central committee decide what values should be inculcated in the schools. That is called indoctrination.”
