Miami, FL – Corey Hetherman, defensive coordinator for the University of Miami football team, has been named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award. The award is given each year to the top assistant coach in college football.
Hetherman’s leadership has contributed to Miami’s strong defensive statistics this season. The Hurricanes are ranked sixth in the nation and first in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for opponents’ points per game, allowing an average of 13.8 points. They also lead the ACC and are seventh nationally in rushing defense, holding opponents to 86.8 yards per game.
In total defense, Miami ranks 11th nationally and first in the ACC by giving up 277.8 yards per game. The team is also first in the ACC and 14th nationally in sacks per game with an average of 2.83.
Additional statistics show that Miami is eighth nationally in opponent yards per play (4.4), seventh in opponent yards per rush (2.9), and eleventh in opponent third-down conversion rate at 31.08%. The Hurricanes have held their opponents to an average of 6.1 yards per pass attempt, which ranks thirteenth among Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

Finalists will be announced on Monday, December 8 at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, and the top five coaches will be honored at the award event in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
