Dominique Johnson, a freshman from Huntley, Illinois, has joined the Miami Hurricanes Men’s Track and Field team. Johnson comes to Miami after graduating from Huntley High School and is majoring in Computer Science.

In a recent interview, Johnson shared his reasons for choosing the University of Miami. “I chose Miami because of the weather, the coaches, and the beautiful campus,” he said.

Johnson described his initial experiences on campus as positive. “It’s been so fun so far. It feels like a dream whenever I’m walking around campus because of how pretty it is here,” he said.

When asked about his favorite aspect of being part of the Hurricanes, Johnson mentioned the variety of activities available. “My favorite part about being a Hurricane is that I’m never bored. There is always something to do on campus whether it’s a sports game or swimming in the pool, or listening to live music at Patio Jams,” he explained.

Adjusting to life in Florida has presented some changes for Johnson. “The biggest adjustment has definitely been the weather. I love the warm weather. It’s just a BIG change from the weather in Illinois,” he noted.

Johnson also shared some personal preferences and facts: his favorite athlete is A’ja Wilson; he enjoys sushi; his favorite movie is “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”; and SZA is his preferred music artist. He recalled having four hermit crabs as his first pets and cited Italy as the farthest place he has traveled from home. In his spare time, he likes to watch movies and goes by the nickname “Dom.”

He described his favorite part of being a student-athlete as “Getting dinner at Canezone with my team.” When asked to describe his team in one word, he chose “Diverse.” Comparing Coral Gables to Huntley, he remarked on the difference in scenery: “There are palm trees instead of corn fields.” He also highlighted this as one of the biggest adjustments moving from high school to college.
