FIU’s baseball team lost the opening game of its series against the Delaware Blue Hens, 9-8, on May 1 at Bob Hannah Stadium in Conference USA play.
The game marked the first meeting between FIU and Delaware as conference opponents. FIU built an early lead but was unable to hold off a comeback by Delaware, who ultimately secured the win.
Marc Hersh put FIU ahead with a three-run home run in the second inning. Aidan Cohall added a two-run double in the third, giving FIU a 5-0 advantage. Mario Trivella drove in another run for FIU in the fourth. However, Delaware responded with five runs in their half of the fourth inning to tie the score at six.
Delaware took control with a two-run homer in the sixth and added another run in the eighth. In the ninth inning, Samuel Fischer hit an RBI triple and Cohall grounded out to bring FIU within one run, but Delaware held on for victory.
Preston Prince started for FIU and allowed five earned runs over 3.2 innings while striking out five batters. Tyrus Riley took the loss after giving up two earned runs across 3.1 innings pitched.
Trivella extended his hitting streak to eight games for FIU, while Cohall drove in three runs and has nine RBI over his last four games. The teams will meet again on Saturday, May 2 at Bob Hannah Stadium.
