FIU’s softball team lost to Middle Tennessee, 7-6 in nine innings, in the second game of its Conference USA series on May 1. The game took place on the road and saw multiple lead changes before a walk-off single by Middle Tennessee ended the contest.
The result matters for both teams as it affects their standing within Conference USA. FIU now holds a record of 33-17 overall and 15-11 in conference play, while Middle Tennessee moves to 21-29 overall and 7-19 in the conference.
The Panthers started strong with a five-run lead after three innings, helped by key hits from Kally Meredith, Kennedy Byrd, Paige Miller, and Leah Clark. Meredith led FIU offensively with three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Despite recording eleven hits and four walks as a team, FIU left ten runners on base throughout the game. J’dah Girigorie took the loss after allowing the deciding run in relief during the ninth inning.
After taking an early advantage with RBI singles from Miller and others, FIU was challenged when Middle Tennessee scored five runs in the fourth inning to tie things up. The teams exchanged leads until a solo home run by Middle Tennessee tied it again in the seventh inning. In extra innings, both sides had opportunities but were unable to score until MTSU loaded the bases with no outs and delivered a walk-off single through the infield.
Looking ahead, FIU will face Middle Tennessee again for their series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m., which will also mark their final regular season game.
