FIU men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams saw several school records broken during the USF Alumni Invitational, according to a March 21 announcement. The event featured standout performances from both veteran and freshman athletes.
The meet marked the start of the outdoor season for FIU, with Blake Orr winning the javelin event with a personal-best throw of 66.58 meters. This throw surpassed his previous school record set at last year’s NCAA East Regionals. Raynell Chambers also broke a school record in the 200-meter dash, finishing third overall with a time of 20.63 seconds behind two University of Minnesota runners.
Freshman Agustin Carril set a new school record in the pole vault by clearing 5.25 meters, placing third among collegiate competitors and trailing only two athletes from Rutgers. On the women’s side, Janiya Cesar improved her own mark in the hammer throw, moving up to second place in the event with a distance of 60.26 meters.
Tim Beauchamp made an impact in his first outdoor competition by setting a freshman record in discus with a throw of 52.28 meters, which also ranks fourth all-time in FIU history for that event.
The team is scheduled to compete next weekend at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables.
