FIU’s Isabell-Mary Luik and Beata Wrigstad were named Conference USA outdoor track and field athletes of the week after their performances at the East Coast Relays, according to a May 5 announcement.
The recognition highlights achievements by both athletes in their respective events. Wrigstad was named women’s freshman of the week following her outdoor debut, where she broke the FIU record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:45.21. This surpassed Paola Reategui’s previous record from 2009 and also set a new freshman record for FIU.
Luik earned honors as women’s field athlete of the week after helping FIU sweep the javelin event at the East Coast Relays with a throw of 51.83 meters, which is fourth-best in school history. Her mark places her second on Conference USA’s TFRRS qualifying list, just behind teammate Arndis Oskarsdottir.
This is the first time this season that both Luik and Wrigstad have received these awards. The team will have a break before preparing for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships scheduled to begin on May 15 in Murfreesboro.
