Rep. María Elvira Salazar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 27th district, has recently shared her views on pressing international issues through a series of tweets.

On May 16, 2025, Rep. Salazar expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Haiti. She stated that “Haití está al borde del colapso total. Pandillas violentas controlan la capital y avanzan hacia el Palacio Nacional.” She mentioned that along with her colleagues, she sent a letter to Secretary Rubio urging for decisive U.S. leadership to restore order in the country.

Later that day, Rep. Salazar commented on Cuba’s political climate following a meeting between Chief of Mission Mike Hammer and José Daniel Ferrer’s wife. She commended Hammer for his efforts and noted that “He’s seeing firsthand what we already know—there’s no freedom in Cuba, only tyranny.” Emphasizing the unjust imprisonment of Ferrer for speaking out against the government, she called for the release of all political prisoners.

In another tweet posted shortly after, Rep. Salazar reiterated her support for Mike Hammer’s meeting with Ferrer’s wife by stating “Aplaudo al Jefe de Misión Mike Hammer por reunirse con la esposa de José Daniel Ferrer.” She highlighted the lack of freedom in Cuba and described it as a brutal dictatorship where individuals like Ferrer are imprisoned unjustly for their truthfulness.

María Elvira Salazar has served in Congress since 2021 after replacing Donna Shalala and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Miami in 1961, she is an alumna of the University of Miami where she graduated with a BA in 1983.
