Rep. María Elvira Salazar, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 27th district, recently addressed her immigration bill and concerns regarding Haiti through a series of tweets. Salazar, who has been in office since 2021 after replacing Donna Shalala, communicated these messages via social media on May 15 and May 16, 2025.
On May 15, Salazar tweeted about her discussion with Varney & Co on Fox Business concerning her immigration bill known as the Dignity Act. She emphasized that the bill promotes “Zero tolerance for criminals” while providing “Protection for certain immigrants—earned through work, good conduct, and a yearly fine they will pay.” She mentioned plans to reintroduce this legislation in Congress soon.
In another post on May 15, she reiterated her message in Spanish, stating, “Acabo de hablar con @varneyco en @FoxBusiness sobre mi proyecto de ley de inmigración: la Ley de Dignidad,” highlighting the same principles of zero tolerance for criminals and earned protection for immigrants.
On May 16, Salazar turned her attention to Haiti’s situation. She noted that “Haiti is on the verge of total collapse—with violent gangs just steps from the National Palace.” In response to this crisis, she joined other Congressional members in sending a letter to Secretary Rubio urging U.S. leadership in implementing hard security solutions to restore order.
María Elvira Salazar was born in Miami in 1961 and continues to reside there today. She graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983 before embarking on her political career.
