María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 27th district since 2021, recently expressed her views on various topics through a series of tweets. Salazar, who succeeded Donna Shalala and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives, shared her thoughts on the current political climate and acknowledged receiving an award for public service.

On May 8, 2025, Rep. María Elvira Salazar commented on what she perceives as a shift in U.S. foreign policy. She stated: “Nuestro país solía defender a los oprimidos y enfrentar a los tiranos. ¿Y ahora? Cuestionamos a nuestros aliados democráticos por no ser lo suficientemente ‘woke’. Es hora de volver a nuestros principios fundamentales: defender la libertad, apoyar a los disidentes y dejar de”. This tweet highlights her concerns about the direction of American diplomatic relations and advocacy for returning to core principles such as defending freedom and supporting dissidents.

The following day, May 9, 2025, she expressed gratitude towards the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) after receiving their Leadership in Public Service Award. In one tweet she wrote: “Thank you to CHLI for the Leadership in Public Service Award. I stand on the shoulders of giants like Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario and Lincoln Díaz-Balart. Leaders who understood that the Hispanic story is the American story, united by faith, family, and freedom.” This message reflects her appreciation for influential figures in her career.

In another tweet posted shortly thereafter on May 9th, she reiterated this sentiment in Spanish: “Agradecida con CHLI por este Premio al Liderazgo en el Servicio Público. Sigo el legado de gigantes como Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario y Lincoln Díaz-Balart—líderes que entendieron que la historia hispana es también la historia de EEUU, unida por la fe, la familia y la libertad.” Here again she acknowledges leaders who have shaped her understanding of Hispanic contributions to America.

María Elvira Salazar was born in Miami in 1961 and graduated from the University of Miami with a BA in 1983. She continues to reside in Miami while serving her constituents.
