Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congress member representing Florida’s 27th district since 2021, recently shared her thoughts on historical and current political issues through a series of tweets. Salazar, who succeeded Donna Shalala in Congress and has previously served in the Florida House of Representatives, addressed themes of freedom, history, and contemporary political dynamics.

On May 8, 2025, Salazar commemorated the anniversary of a pivotal moment in World War II with her tweet: “80 years ago, America saved the world from tyranny. The Greatest Generation stormed Normandy, liberated Europe, and etched freedom into history. We honor every hero who gave everything so the world could live free.” This message highlights her appreciation for those who participated in D-Day and their role in shaping global history.

In another tweet posted shortly after on the same day at 14:34:42 UTC, she reiterated this sentiment in Spanish: “Hace 80 años, Estados Unidos salvó al mundo de la tiranía. La Generación Grandiosa desembarcó en Normandía, liberó Europa y dejó grabada la libertad en la historia. Hoy honramos a cada héroe que lo dio todo para que el mundo pudiera vivir en libertad.” This bilingual approach underscores her connection to both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking constituents.

Later that day at 17:52:26 UTC, Salazar commented on current U.S. foreign policy directions with a critical perspective: “Our country used to stand up for the oppressed and stare down tyrants. Now? We lecture our democratic allies for not being woke enough. It’s time we return to our original ideals: defend liberty, support dissidents and stop exporting woke ideology.” Her statement reflects concern over perceived shifts away from traditional American values regarding international relations.

María Elvira Salazar was born in Miami in 1961 and graduated from the University of Miami with a BA in 1983. She continues to reside in Miami while serving as an active member of Congress.
