The University of Miami Hurricanes baseball team secured a 5-2 win against Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday at Mark Light Field. The victory improved Miami’s record to 11-2, while Bethune-Cookman moved to 9-4.
Jake Dorn earned the win in relief for Miami, pitching two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Anthony Anselmo took the loss for Bethune-Cookman after giving up two runs over 2.1 innings. Richmond transfer Ryan Bilka notched his first save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Miami took an early lead in the second inning when Brylan West singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Fabio Peralta. In the fifth, Daniel Cuvet hit another sacrifice fly to bring home Jake Ogden, making it 2-1 for Miami.
Bethune-Cookman tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single from Michael Rodriguez. However, Miami responded in the bottom of the seventh as Derek Williams hit a two-run double following a double by Cuvet and a walk drawn by Dylan Dubovik. Williams then scored on a sacrifice fly from West, resulting in three runs for Miami that inning.
Miami’s bullpen prevented any further scoring from Bethune-Cookman during the final three innings. Lazaro Collera and Bilka combined efforts to close out the game.
Looking ahead, Miami will begin conference play with a three-game series at home against Boston College. The first game is scheduled for 7 p.m., with coverage available on ACCNX and WVUM 90.5 FM radio.
