The Miami Hurricanes baseball team secured a 10-5 victory over Troy in the opening round of the NCAA Gainesville Regional at Condron Family Ballpark, according to a May 30 report. The game ended at 1:48 a.m., with Miami pulling away late thanks to a five-run eighth inning and home runs from Derek Williams and Vance Sheahan.
Lyndon Glidewell earned the win out of the bullpen by recording the final six outs for Miami. Starting pitcher Rob Evans gave up three runs on seven hits across five innings while striking out four. Jack Durso contributed two scoreless innings before handing over pitching duties to Glidewell.
Troy’s Tommy Egan took the loss after allowing five earned runs in just one-third of an inning during Miami’s decisive eighth-inning rally. Benjamin Stubbs started for Troy, giving up four runs—three earned—over 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.
Miami’s offense began producing early, scoring four runs in the third inning with home runs from Sheahan and Williams. Sheahan hit a solo shot to left field, followed by Williams’ three-run homer that extended Miami’s lead to 4-0. Troy responded by scoring once in the fourth and twice more in the fifth, narrowing Miami’s lead to 4-3.
Williams added an insurance run for Miami in the seventh after drawing a walk and later scoring on a throwing error by Troy’s catcher. In the top of the eighth, Drew Nelson hit a two-run homer for Troy that tied the game at five before Miami answered back with its pivotal five-run bottom half of the inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Max Galvin, Alonzo Alvarez, Dylan Dubovik and Brandon DeGoti.
With this win, Miami advances to face regional host Florida Gators on Saturday at 8 p.m.
