The University of Miami men’s basketball team defeated Georgetown 78-65 on Friday in the final game of the Terry’s Chocolate ESPN Events Invitational held in Kissimmee, Florida.
Miami started strong, opening with a 16-3 run in the first seven minutes. After Georgetown scored its first basket, Miami’s defense forced the Hoyas to miss their next 15 shots and allowed only one point over a nine-minute stretch. Georgetown managed to narrow the gap to six points at 18-12, but Miami responded with a 23-8 run to end the half, leading 41-20 at halftime.
Malik Reneau led Miami in scoring during the first half with 19 points, including a three-pointer just before halftime. The Hurricanes held Georgetown to an 18.5 percent shooting rate from the field and limited them to three successful three-point attempts out of thirteen.
In the second half, after making only one of their first five shots, Miami converted its next ten field goals and built a lead as large as 24 points with just over nine minutes left. Georgetown reduced the deficit to ten points late in the game, but Tre Donaldson made a pullup jumper and Tru Washington added two free throws to secure the win for Miami.
Reneau finished with 23 points for Miami. Tru Washington contributed 17 points and six rebounds, while Donaldson recorded 13 points along with six assists and four rebounds. The Hurricanes shot nearly 59 percent from the field overall and made 60 percent of their three-point attempts.
Miami also outscored Georgetown by ten points in the paint and had a slight edge in rebounding.
The Hurricanes will play next on Tuesday against Ole Miss as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge. The game is scheduled for 9 p.m. on SEC Network.
