The University of Miami track and field team began its indoor season at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, achieving two new school records and several other notable performances.
Senior Natalie Varela broke the school record in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:44.90. Gabriella Grissom moved to second on the program’s all-time list for the event with a time of 2:48.13. In the men’s 300-meter dash, Ace Malone set a new program record at 32.70 seconds, while George Franks finished just behind him with a time of 32.88 seconds, marking the second-fastest performance in school history.
Other top finishes included Sanaa Hebron running 37.69 seconds in the women’s 300 meters for the second-fastest time in program history, and Janay Moorer posting a time of 38.10 seconds for fifth-best all-time.
In distance events, Prescott Noll recorded the fifth-fastest men’s 1000-meter mark for Miami at 2:29.22. Desmond Coleman achieved a throw of 20.83 meters in the men’s weight throw, ranking fourth on Miami’s all-time list, while Heath Vernor improved his own fifth-best mark to 19.79 meters.
Kennedy Sauder won the men’s high jump by clearing 2.05 meters. The women’s weight throw saw Jocelyn Pringle (20.48m), Tania Da Silva (20.16m), and Calea Jackson (19.60m) sweep first through third place for Miami.
Dominique Johnson placed third in her collegiate debut in triple jump with a distance of 12.85 meters, and the women’s 4×400-meter relay team—composed of Grissom, Hebron, Nandy Kihuyu, and Moorer—finished second with a time of 3:39.17.
The Hurricanes will compete next at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on January 30-31.
