Miami women’s tennis team advances to NCAA second round with win over North Florida

The University of Miami women’s tennis team defeated the North Florida Ospreys 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championships on May 1.

The result moves Miami into the second round, where they will face either Auburn or Bryant. The match took place in Auburn, Alabama.

Sebastianna Scilipoti and Sofia Rocchetti secured a doubles victory against Aryana Bartlett and Anslee Long with a score of 6-2 on court two. Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka followed with a 6-4 win over Laurie Barendse and Isabel Oliveira at the top court, giving Miami an early lead. Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Maria Vargas were tied at 4-4 with Gabby Goyins and Jasmin Makela on court three when their match was stopped.

In singles play, Daria Volosova won against Anslee Long (6-0, 6-4) on court six, while No. 114 Ogunwale earned a straight-set victory over May Fadida (6-2, 6-1). No. 38 Gonzalez clinched the overall win for Miami by defeating Barendse (6-3, 6-4) at the top singles position.

The Hurricanes will compete again tomorrow for a spot in the next stage of the tournament.
