WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Carlos A. Giménez (FL-28) has called for a ban on travel between China and the United States in response to reports of a mysterious respiratory illness spreading in China. Giménez, who represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, highlighted the need to prioritize public health and protect the country from potential threats.
Giménez emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed concerns about the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) lack of transparency and the consequences it had on the global response to the virus. Giménez stated, "Four years after the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the world, there is a mysterious new respiratory illness once again spreading in China. During the coronavirus pandemic, the CCP's lies and lack of transparency regarding the disease and its origin robbed the U.S. of vital knowledge and hampered our ability to respond."
Citing the CCP's history of misinformation during public health crises, Giménez stressed the need for caution. He stated, "Communist China cannot be trusted. Until more is known about this mysterious illness, we must immediately ban all travel between Communist China and the United States to guard our public health and protect our country." Giménez urged the United States to take proactive measures to prevent the potential spread of the illness to American shores.
Giménez, the only Cuban-born member of the 118th Congress, brings a unique perspective to the issue. Having fled his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover of the island, he understands the consequences of oppressive regimes. In addition to his role as a congressman, Giménez serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the Homeland Security Committee, and the Select Committee on China.
As concerns about the mysterious respiratory illness continue to grow, Giménez's call for a travel ban between China and the United States underscores the need for swift action to prioritize public health and safeguard the country's well-being.
