Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez introduced the Prohibiting Student Loan Forgiveness for Antisemites Act today. The bill aims to prohibit students convicted of hate crimes under state or federal law at institutions of higher learning from being eligible for loan forgiveness.
In the past year, there has been an increase in hate on college campuses, with violence directed towards Jewish students rising significantly. The incidents during the 2023-2024 school year have drawn national attention and concern. The legislation underscores the need to hold those responsible for committing hate crimes accountable.
On a day when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is set to address a joint session of Congress, Congressman Gimenez emphasized the importance of reaffirming that antisemitism is unacceptable in the United States.
“We must not allow antisemites to benefit from their hate,” said Congressman Carlos Gimenez. “With this bill, we ensure that those that are convicted of a state or federal hate crime will not receive loan forgiveness benefits. Hate has no place in our nation; therefore, we must and will continue to stand with the U.S. and international Jewish community.”
Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He is noted as the only Cuban-born Member of the 118th Congress and served as both Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County before his election to Congress. He chairs the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, serves on the Armed Services Committee, and participates in the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
