Washington, D.C. - Today, Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez chaired the House Homeland Security Committee to examine the U.S. Coast Guard’s role in securing the homeland. Rep. Gimenez questioned Admiral Linda L. Fagan, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Rep. Gimenez discussed a U.S. Coast Guard cutter that was scheduled to be operational but has yet to be fully designed. "These years of setbacks result in a serious issue of national security and the committee demands real answers as to the reasons for these delays," he stated.

Further, Rep. Gimenez examined issues related to recruitment and retention within the U.S. Coast Guard, noting that currently, more service members are leaving than joining.

Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He is the only Cuban-born Member of the 118th Congress and is noted for his background as a career firefighter paramedic and former Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County. He serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, as well as being a member of both the Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
