U.S. Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez issued a statement today expressing his appreciation to the Republic of Peru for its support of democracy in Venezuela. He commended Peru for being the first country to recognize Edmundo Gonzalez as the new President-Elect of Venezuela.

"As Co-Chair of the Congressional Peru Caucus, I applaud the Republic of Peru's leadership as the first country to recognize Edmundo Gonzalez as the new President-Elect of Venezuela," said Rep. Gimenez. "I encourage other regional allies to follow Peru's leadership and recognize Edmundo Gonzalez as Venezuela's new President-Elect. As South Florida's voice in Congress, home to the largest Peruvian-American community and Venezuelan exile community in the United States, I will continue to demand the Biden-Harris Administration do the same."

Congressman Carlos Gimenez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He is noted for being the only Cuban-born member of the 118th Congress, having left Cuba after its Communist takeover. Previously, he served as Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County. In Congress, he chairs several committees including Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, Armed Services Committee, and Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.
