Today, Congressman Carlos Gimenez from Florida issued a statement condemning recent actions by Nicaragua's leader, Daniel Ortega. The changes made by Ortega's regime would position him as co-president alongside his wife and current Vice President, Rosario Murillo.

"Nicaragua's tyrant Daniel Ortega's latest constitutional reform is just another blatant pathetic attempt to perpetuate his corrupt family into power," stated Congressman Carlos Gimenez. He criticized the regime for its continued oppression of the Nicaraguan people and compared Ortega's actions to those of socialist leaders Castro, Maduro, and Chavez. Gimenez called on the Biden-Harris Administration to restrict Nicaragua's access to global financial markets and participation in the Central America Free Trade Agreement. He expressed confidence that with Donald Trump as President and Marco Rubio as Secretary of State come January, U.S. policy towards Nicaragua will support democracy and human rights.

Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Sweetwater, known as Little Managua due to its significant Nicaraguan exile community. As the only Cuban-born member of the 118th Congress, he has a personal history of fleeing communism. His career includes serving as Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County before being elected to Congress. Currently, he chairs the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security and serves on other committees.
