U.S. Congressman welcomes Venezuelan president-elect amid political discussions

Today, Congressman Carlos Gimenez from Florida's 28th District, along with Representatives Mike Waltz, Maria Elvira Salazar, and Mario Diaz-Balart, welcomed Venezuela's President-elect Edmundo Gonzalez to the United States Congress.

Edmundo Gonzalez emerged victorious against Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela's presidential elections held on July 28, 2024. The U.S. has expressed its support for the Venezuelan people and their choice of Gonzalez as their leader. His term is set to begin on January 10, 2025.

Congressman Carlos Gimenez stated, "Honored to welcome President-Elect Edmundo Gonzalez of Venezuela to the United States Congress." He emphasized the importance of standing with Venezuelans in their pursuit of freedom and urged all options be considered as Gonzalez prepares to take office. Gimenez also mentioned his confidence that former President Trump would continue to pressure Nicolas Maduro and support efforts towards change in Venezuela.

Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He is notable for being the only Cuban-born member of the 119th Congress. His career began in firefighting, where he served as Fire Chief of Miami before transitioning into politics as Mayor of Miami-Dade County. Currently, he holds roles such as Vice Chair of the Republican Governance Group and Chairman of various subcommittees related to homeland security and transportation.
