Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congress member representing Florida's 27th district, has recently voiced her concerns on social media regarding political issues in Venezuela and Ecuador. Salazar, who succeeded Donna Shalala in 2021, has been active in highlighting human rights issues and criticizing foreign governments.
On February 13, 2025, Rep. Salazar expressed her disapproval of the Venezuelan government led by Nicolás Maduro. She stated that "The Maduro regime is unjustly imprisoning @jesusarmasccs, an ally of @MariaCorinaYA and a fierce defender of liberty and human rights in Venezuela." She called for the immediate release of Jesús Armas and other political prisoners without conditions.
In another tweet posted shortly after, she reiterated her stance in Spanish: "El régimen de Maduro mantiene en prisión injustamente a @jesusarmasccs, aliado de @MariaCorinaYA y férreo defensor de la libertad y los Derechos Humanos en Venezuela." Again emphasizing the need for the release of these individuals.
Later that day, Salazar commented on the situation faced by Venezuelans fleeing to Ecuador. She criticized USAID-funded programs for allegedly promoting gender ideology rather than addressing essential needs: "Venezuelans flee from a tyrannical government just to arrive in Ecuador and receive USAID-funded programs to become… drag queens?!?!" She argued that their needs should be prioritized over such initiatives.
