Chairman Carlos Gimenez presided over a hearing in Washington D.C. to evaluate the security measures being implemented in anticipation of major international events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the United States' 250th anniversary.
During the hearing, Chairman Gimenez highlighted the need for effective preparation, quoting, "These events are more than just celebrations or competitions. They are major opportunities to show the world what America stands for and what we can achieve." He emphasized the potential economic benefits, referencing the U.S. Travel Association's projection of nearly $95 billion in economic activity and over 40 million international visitors.
Gimenez pointed out issues such as lengthy visa waits, obsolete airport technology, and staffing shortages at ports of entry, stating, "These problems are not just frustrating, they could cost us jobs, investment, and global influence."
To address these concerns, he expressed support for a recent Executive Order by President Trump, which establishes a White House Task Force aimed at coordinating efforts for the 2026 World Cup. He is also proposing a bill to create a federal task force encompassing all major international events that will occur over the next few years.
Gimenez underscored the importance of security at these events. He stated, "We need to make sure agencies like DHS, TSA, and state and local law enforcement have the tools and coordination they need to stop these threats in the planning stage, long before they can cause harm."
Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of upgrading the travel system, with better technology at airports, reduced visa wait times, and adequate staffing at entry points. He concluded by expressing optimism about setting a global standard for security, hospitality, and safety, with the United States at the forefront. He remarked, "The world will be watching. And with the right vision and coordination, the United States can set the global standard—not just for security, but for innovation, hospitality, and safety."
Carlos Gimenez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, and serves as the only Cuban-born Member of the 119th Congress. His career includes being a firefighter paramedic, Fire Chief of Miami, and Mayor of Miami-Dade County. He is Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, among other roles.
