The University of Miami is experiencing a busy postseason across its athletic programs as March begins, according to Athletic Director Dan Radakovich.
The men’s basketball team recently defeated Boston College 76-54, bringing their record to 23-6 overall and 12-4 in ACC play. The team has won six of its last seven games and is working to secure an NCAA Tournament berth and a top-four seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament in Charlotte. Their next games include a road trip to SMU on Wednesday and a regular season finale at home against Louisville.
The women’s basketball team ended its regular season with a loss at Georgia Tech, finishing with a 16-13 overall record and 8-10 in the ACC. They are set as the 12th seed for the ACC Tournament and will face Stanford on Wednesday in Duluth, Georgia.
Spring football practice for Mario Cristobal’s squad begins March 24. The roster features returning players along with new additions from transfers and recruits. Ten Miami players were invited to the recent NFL Scouting Combine, highlighting the program’s national standing.
Miami football will host seven home games this fall at Hard Rock Stadium, including matchups against Florida State, Duke, and Virginia Tech. Season ticket sales have reached record levels but some seats remain available.
In baseball, Miami’s team holds a 10-2 record after losing two games to No. 10 Florida before rain canceled Sunday’s game. Offensively, they average over 13 runs per game. Daniel Cuvet has hit six home runs in twelve games while Dylan Dubovik leads the nation with a .565 batting average. The Canes return home Wednesday to play Bethune-Cookman before starting ACC play against Boston College on Friday.
At the recent ACC Indoor Championships in Boston, Miami’s women placed fourth and men sixth in track and field. Tania Da Silva won gold in women’s weight throw as Miami swept that event; Ace Malone took gold in the men’s 400m; Edgar Campre won the heptathlon; and the men’s relay team also secured first place. The teams now prepare for NCAA Indoor Championships scheduled for March 13-14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The women’s swimming and diving team finished twelfth at ACC Championships while three male divers earned thirteenth place based solely on diving points. Chiara Pellacani (3-meter) and Margo O’Meara (1-meter) each claimed conference titles ahead of NCAA Championships later this month at Georgia Tech.
Other spring sports are underway: golf has completed two tournaments; tennis teams have started ACC competition; rowing opens its season March 14 at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Four student-athletes—Sarah Sensenbrenner (swimming), Robert Joseph (track), Chiara Pellacani (diving), and Rueben Bain (football)—received postgraduate scholarship recognition from the Atlantic Coast Conference for academic achievement or professional aspirations.
Last month, Miami placed third among Division I schools—and first among Power Four institutions—in the NCAA Team Works Community Service Competition powered by Helper Helper. Every student-athlete participated in community service activities during this period.
“I am immensely proud that our student-athletes continue to place among the top schools nationally in this competition,” said Radakovich. “I want to thank our head coaches and Shirelle Jackson and our student-athlete development staff for placing such a high emphasis on community involvement.”
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame & Museum will hold its induction banquet April 23 at Watsco Center honoring ten former athletes—including Sam Dorman (diving), Wendy Foote (basketball), Bryan Garcia (baseball), Duke Johnson (football), Savanah Leaf (volleyball), Mike Rumph (football), Duane Starks (football), Phallon Tullis-Joyce (soccer), Shakima Wimbley (track & field) —and former coach Mark Richt. Tommy Adams will receive a Distinguished Service Award for his support of Canes baseball.
