Miami, FL - Congressman Carlos Gimenez, Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, expressed his pride in examining security challenges and ways to bolster port infrastructure at a joint field hearing held at PortMiami. Gimenez, along with Rep. Daniel Webster, emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the port in light of emerging security threats.

Gimenez stated, “Miami is a unique, robust, and beautiful city that offers much to residents, visitors, and our nation as a whole. Our venue, PortMiami, is one of the busiest passenger and cargo ports in the United States and is a gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America.”

During the hearing, various experts and stakeholders in the maritime industry provided insights on port security and infrastructure. Rear Admiral John C. Vann and Rear Admiral Wayne Arguin from the United States Coast Guard, along with other industry professionals, discussed the crucial role of ports in the nation's economy and security.

Gimenez highlighted the importance of addressing security vulnerabilities in port equipment, particularly those manufactured or installed in China. He raised concerns about the potential cybersecurity threats posed by Chinese state-owned enterprises in the maritime sector, emphasizing the need to safeguard U.S. ports from malicious actors.

In response to these concerns, Gimenez commended the Biden administration for providing the U.S. Coast Guard with new authorities to address security threats targeting the maritime sector, particularly those originating from China. He stressed the importance of continued examination and legislative solutions to protect ports from hostile actors.

As the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, Gimenez is dedicated to addressing security challenges facing maritime ports and ensuring the safety and resilience of the nation's port infrastructure.

Gimenez, the only Cuban-born Member of Congress, brings a unique perspective to the discussion, drawing from his personal experiences and professional background in public service. His efforts to bolster port safety and security reflect a commitment to protecting vital maritime assets and strengthening national security measures.
