Washington, D.C. – Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez has called on the Biden Administration to take action against Communist China and Cuba. According to Gimenez, the Cuban regime has effectively become a satellite state of Communist China, with military facilities along its coast. New satellite images reveal an increase in spy bases linked to Communist China in Cuba, located just 90 miles from U.S. shores. The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) expansion in the region poses a threat to national security and specifically to South Florida.
These military intelligence facilities are situated 90 miles from the U.S. mainland and only 70 miles from the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, as reported by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). These bases enhance the CCP's ability to conduct espionage on American citizens and U.S. intelligence agencies, making Cuba a proxy of the CCP.
Gimenez represents Florida’s Southernmost district, including the Florida Keys, which he says are directly threatened by these espionage bases. He also highlighted other signs of growing influence by adversaries in the hemisphere, such as China's construction of a mega port in Peru and Russia's deployment of nuclear-powered submarines to Havana harbor.
"Our enemy is at our doorstep and Joe Biden has failed to lead," said Gimenez. He criticized what he described as a pattern of appeasement by the Biden Administration towards Cuba, including granting regime agents access to sensitive TSA facilities at U.S. airports and seaports, removing Cuba from the list of countries not fully cooperating against terrorism, and providing economic concessions.
“Communist China is proactively undermining the United States and President Biden has failed to take action,” stated Rep. Carlos Gimenez. “I urge the Biden Administration to counter Communist China’s use of Castro’s Cuba as their satellite state in the Western Hemisphere and apply the full weight of U.S. sanctions to prevent further expansion efforts.”
Gimenez emphasized that anti-American adversaries are establishing spy bases close to U.S. territory for espionage and cyberattacks, calling for these threats to be met with strength.
Congressman Carlos Giménez represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He is noted as being the only Cuban-born Member of Congress during his term and has served as Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County before his election to Congress.
