Washington, D.C. - Congressman Carlos Gimenez has joined Florida Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, along with Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Maria Elvira Salazar, Michael Waltz, Neal Dunn, and Byron Donalds in advocating for Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. This collective effort comes in recognition of Machado’s persistent endeavors to defend and restore democracy in Venezuela following the July 28, 2024 presidential elections that declared Edmundo Gonzalez the rightful leader.

The letter addressed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlights Machado's bravery and dedication:

"We write to you in support of the nomination of María Corina Machado for the Nobel Peace Prize."

The lawmakers emphasize their rare observation of such courage and moral fortitude in María Corina Machado within their roles as policymakers promoting democracy and human rights against dictatorial regimes.

"She has risked everything to rally the previously flagging spirits of the Venezuelan people. They have suffered 25 years of oppression, torture, murder, and economic deprivation at the hands of the Chavez-Maduro regime who has systematically undermined democratic institutions and perpetuated a regional crisis of monumental proportions. Machado stands as a beacon of hope and resilience."

Despite severe personal threats including attempts on her life, Machado remains committed to restoring democratic governance in Venezuela. Her leadership is seen as crucial in mobilizing both domestic and international support for a peaceful resolution to ongoing electoral fraud issues. The letter underscores her efforts toward advocating free and fair elections while highlighting human rights abuses under the current regime.

"In the recent election, Machado’s work has showcased her unwavering resolve and ability to inspire and rally others towards the noble cause of democracy. Her actions reflect a deep-seated belief in justice, human rights, and the rule of law—values that are foundational to the mission of the Nobel Peace Prize."

The signatories note that millions have fled Venezuela due to Maduro's oppressive policies while millions more remain trapped under his rule.

"It is our firm belief that María Corina Machado’s courageous and selfless leadership, and unyielding dedication to the pursuit of peace and democratic ideals make her a most deserving candidate for this prestigious award."

They call upon the Nobel Committee to recognize Maria Corina Machado’s significant contributions by granting her this distinguished honor.
