Congressman Carlos Gimenez has extended his congratulations to U.S. Senator Marco Rubio on his nomination for Secretary of State by President-elect Donald J. Trump. Senator Rubio, who was born and raised in Miami, Florida, has held various leadership roles including commissioner in the City of West Miami, Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, U.S. Senator, and Republican presidential candidate.
"President Trump has made a truly historic and brilliant choice in selecting Senator Marco Rubio as our nation’s Secretary of State," Congressman Gimenez stated. "Senator Rubio is America’s statesman, a proven expert in international affairs, and an unequivocal champion for freedom, democracy, and global Human Rights."
Gimenez expressed pride in Rubio's accomplishments as a fellow Floridian and Cuban American. He noted that Rubio will become the highest-ranking Hispanic leader in U.S. history upon confirmation as Secretary of State.
Congressman Gimenez himself is notable as the only Cuban-born member of the 118th Congress. He fled Cuba after the Communist takeover and later served as Fire Chief of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County before being elected to Congress.
