WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Carlos A. Giménez was chosen by Speaker Kevin McCarthy to serve as a chief negotiator for this year's National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). In this role, Congressman Giménez will work with the U.S. Senate to reach an agreement on the NDAA, which aims to fully fund the military, support service members, and protect the community from various threats.
As the only Member from South Florida serving on the Armed Services Committee, Congressman Giménez brings a unique perspective to the negotiations. His top priorities include preserving Homestead Air Reserve Base for its original mission, reducing out-of-pocket housing expenses in high-cost districts, increasing pay to service members, and strengthening ties with allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be selected by Speaker Kevin McCarthy as a chief negotiator for this year's National Defense Authorization Act," said Congressman Carlos A. Giménez. "As the only Member from South Florida serving on the Armed Services Committee, I am proud to work for an NDAA that fully funds our military, supports our service members, and protects our community from the growing threats posed by Communist China, Communist Cuba, the regime in Iran, and Russia."
Congressman Giménez, who serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, the Select Committee on China, and the Armed Services Committee, is the only Cuban-born Member of the 118th Congress. Having been forced from his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover, he understands the importance of safeguarding national security.
Negotiators will now consider the Senate and House versions of the NDAA to come to an agreement that will ensure the military is fully funded through Fiscal Year 2024. This process will play a crucial role in strengthening the nation's defense capabilities and addressing the challenges posed by global adversaries.
