Congressman Carlos Gimenez of Florida announced today that he will be voting for Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana to be the next Speaker of the House of Representatives. Gimenez, who is the only career firefighter paramedic in Congress, expressed his pride in serving alongside Johnson, who is the son of firefighters.
Gimenez criticized the actions of the Gang of 8 and all the Democrats in the House who removed the previous Speaker, Kevin McCarthy. He described their actions as irresponsible and shortsighted, leading to chaos in Congress and the country.
"As Republicans, we have come together to elect Representative Mike Johnson of Shreveport, Louisiana as our Speaker Designee," Gimenez said. "I fully intend to support and vote for him on the Floor. Mike is honorable, he's the son of a firefighter, and a straightforward leader who can unite our Republican Conference. I look forward to working closely with Speaker Johnson to deliver results for the people of South Florida."
Gimenez, who represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, is the only Cuban-born member of the 118th Congress. He fled his homeland shortly after the Communist takeover of the island. He currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee, the Homeland Security Committee, and the Select Committee on China.
This announcement from Congressman Carlos Gimenez highlights his support for Representative Mike Johnson as the next Speaker of the House. Gimenez's endorsement emphasizes Johnson's qualities as an honorable and straightforward leader who can unite the Republican Conference. The vote for the new Speaker will have significant implications for the future direction of the House of Representatives.
