Congressman Carlos A. Giménez (FL-28) has taken part in a Homeland Security Committee markup of articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The articles of impeachment were approved by the committee and will now proceed to the full House floor for a vote.
Giménez criticized Mayorkas for his handling of the border crisis, stating that his "reckless, open-border policies have purposefully enabled the worst border crisis in modern American history." He accused Mayorkas of endangering border patrol agents, jeopardizing the lives of migrants, and compromising national security.
Giménez emphasized the seriousness of Mayorkas' actions, calling it a "blatant breach of his oath of office" and demanding accountability. He stated, "After an extensive investigation into the causes, costs, and consequences of this crisis, it is clear Secretary Mayorkas is responsible and must be held accountable."
The Committee's investigation into Mayorkas unfolded over five phases and included testimonies from border patrol chiefs, former DHS officials, and individuals directly impacted by the border crisis. The committee released interim reports for each phase, highlighting Mayorkas' dereliction of duty, his impact on criminal organizations, the human costs of his policies, the financial costs, and the waste and abuse enabled under his leadership.
In addition to the impeachment proceedings, Giménez provided key facts about the situation at the southern border. He revealed that encounters at the border have increased significantly, with a 40% rise since FY2021 and over 100% compared to FY2019. He also highlighted the apprehension of individuals on the terrorist watchlist, the arrest of aliens with criminal convictions or outstanding warrants, and the seizure of a substantial amount of fentanyl.
