MIAMI, FL - Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez (FL-28) has spoken out about the recent wave of protests in Cuba against the Castro dictatorship. Gimenez, the only Cuban-born Member of Congress, emphasized the significance of the demonstrations, stating, “On July 11, 2021, thousands of Cubans took to the streets demanding freedom.” He further highlighted the ongoing protests, noting, "Today, on March 17, thousands of Cubans have taken to the streets again to protest the murderous Castro dictatorship and demand freedom, power, and food."

The Congressman condemned the regime's response to the protests, stating, "In response, the regime shut down the internet to prevent protesters from organizing and mobilized its secret police to brutalize and jail the opposition." He expressed concern for those unjustly detained, mentioning, "Today, over 1,000 brave men and women are being jailed unjustly for exercising their basic Human Rights."

Reflecting on the long-standing oppression in Cuba, Gimenez asserted, "After sixty-four years of tyranny, the Cuban people want to be free." He called for action from the Biden Administration, urging, "I’m calling on the Biden Administration to do the right thing and provide the island of Cuba with satellite internet to stop the repression of the dictatorial regime."

Congressman Gimenez, who fled the island with his family after the communist takeover, represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, as well as on the Armed Services Committee and the Select Committee on China.
