Miami, FL - Congressman Carlos A. Giménez (FL-28) issued a statement today following the protests in Cuba against the Castro dictatorship.
"The 11th of July 2021, hundreds of thousands of Cubans took to the streets demanding freedom," said Representative Giménez. "Today, the 17th of March, thousands of Cubans have once again taken to the streets to protest against the murderous dictatorship on the island and demand freedom, electricity, and food. In response, the regime shut down internet access to prevent the protesters from organizing and mobilized its state security to repress and imprison the opposition. As of today, more than 1,000 brave men and women are unjustly imprisoned for exercising their human rights in the Castro dungeons."
Giménez, the only member of Congress born in Cuba who fled the island with his family shortly after the communist takeover, represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. He serves on the Committee on Homeland Security, the Armed Services Committee, and the Select Committee on China.
"I call on the Biden Administration to do the right thing and provide satellite internet to the island of Cuba to stop the regime's repression. In 2024, the technology already exists to effectively provide internet to the island."
