MIAMI, FL - Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez (FL-28) held a press conference today with Cuban opposition leaders, including Rosa María Payá, to address the ongoing anti-regime protests in Cuba that have been escalating since March 17.
“Since yesterday, March 17, hundreds of thousands of Cubans have taken to the streets to protest the brutal Castro dictatorship and demand freedom, power, and food,” stated Rep. Gimenez.
The congressman highlighted the oppressive response of the Cuban regime to the protests, stating, “In response, the cowardly regime shut down internet access and mobilized its secret police to brutalize and jail the protesters.” He emphasized the long-standing desire of the Cuban people for freedom after decades of tyranny and repression, expressing his solidarity with them.
Gimenez called upon the Biden Administration to take action, urging them to “immediately provide the island of Cuba with satellite internet” in support of the freedom-loving people of Cuba.
Congressman Carlos Gimenez, the only Cuban-born Member of Congress, fled the island with his family following the communist takeover. He represents Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, holding key positions in congressional committees such as Homeland Security and Armed Services.
