Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congress member representing Florida's 27th district since 2021, recently took to social media to address significant international issues concerning Venezuela, Colombia, and Cuba. The congresswoman expressed her concerns through a series of tweets on December 11, 2024.
In her first tweet on December 11, Salazar questioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken regarding the United States' stance on oil licenses benefiting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. She stated: "Hoy le pregunté al @SecBlinken si Estados Unidos cancelará las licencias petroleras que están llenando los bolsillos de Maduro y sus cómplices." She emphasized the urgency of preventing Maduro from taking office again on January 10.
In another tweet from the same day, Salazar addressed a request made by Colombian President Gustavo Petro to U.S. President Joe Biden. She reported that Petro had asked for clemency for FARC leader Simón Trinidad, who has been involved in kidnapping Americans and killing Colombians. Salazar urged Secretary Blinken not to allow such an action by stating: "El presidente Petro le pidió a @POTUS que indulte al líder de las FARC, Simón Trinidad, que secuestró a estadounidenses y asesinó a colombianos."
Finally, Salazar commented on the Cuban government's alleged support for terrorism and criminal activities. In her post from December 11, she affirmed that Cuba should remain on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism and relayed Secretary Blinken's confirmation that no changes are anticipated in this regard: "La Dictadura comunista cubana financia a terroristas, alberga criminales y es aliada de otros Estados terroristas."
