MIAMI, FL - Congressman Carlos A. Giménez (FL-28) has spoken out following the Biden Administration's recent efforts to enhance port cybersecurity against potential threats from Communist China. In a statement, Rep. Gimenez emphasized the importance of safeguarding America's seaports, stating, “Communist China is our foremost adversary and poses the most significant national security threat against the United States.”
Highlighting the critical role of ports in the nation's economic activity, Rep. Gimenez expressed concerns about the potential impact of a cyberattack by Communist China on domestic and global supply chains. He commended the Biden Administration for taking action to address these cybersecurity challenges, stating, “For years, both as Mayor of Miami-Dade County and as a Member of Congress, I have been warning about the undue influence of Communist China on our port cranes and the need to protect our nation’s port infrastructure. Finally, the Biden Administration has taken action to enhance port cybersecurity.”
As the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security, Rep. Giménez oversees key agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). His background as a former Fire Chief of the City of Miami and Mayor of Miami-Dade County, as well as his service on committees related to national security and China, positions him as a knowledgeable voice on cybersecurity and port infrastructure protection.
Congressman Carlos Giménez, representing Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, has a unique perspective as the only Cuban-born Member of the 118th Congress, having fled his homeland after the Communist regime took over. His dedication to national security and protecting critical infrastructure underscores the importance of bipartisan efforts to address cybersecurity threats in the maritime sector.
