CITY OF CORAL GABLES: In the 1960s, Roxcy O’Neal Bolton opened her Coral Gables home to those who wanted to campaign for equal rights for women

City Of Coral Gables issued the following announcement on Mar. 15.

In the 1960s, Roxcy O’Neal Bolton opened her Coral Gables home to those who wanted to campaign for equal rights for women. She founded the Miami Dade Chapter of the National Organization for Women. Women in Distress, the first women’s rescue shelter in Florida, and the Rape Treatment Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital were also established in her home. Community meetings in her home also created the Citizen’s Crime Watch of Dade County.

She also led the effort to open the Women’s Park in Miami in 1992, which was the first outdoor space in America honoring past and present women leaders.

Her home is considered a historical marker. Roxcy is a symbol of courage and hope for women everywhere. The city is lucky to be the home of such an important figure in women’s history.
